Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has announced an ambitious target of over ₦100 billion from livestock production and processing. This initiative aims to boost the state’s economy, enhance the capacity of farmers in animal husbandry, and strengthen the agricultural value chain.
The governor made this announcement while receiving a delegation from the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), led by National Project Coordinator Sanusi Abubakar, in Enugu. The delegation was in the state for the flag-off of the first Regional Enugu Model Veterinary Hospital on Monday.
Expressing excitement, Governor Mbah highlighted that the new veterinary hospital comes at a crucial time as the state focuses on expanding meat and dairy production for local consumption and export. He noted that the recently enacted Enugu State Ranch Management Agency Law is designed to unlock economic opportunities, create employment in the livestock sector, and significantly boost the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
The governor emphasized the importance of robust policies and legal frameworks to support these initiatives. He stated, “We are aware that Enugu has a market size of over ₦100 billion, and we are quite ambitious in the growth projection of our GDP.” He encouraged investors to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the new ranch law, the veterinary hospital, and the partnership with L-PRES, assuring them of the sustained security of lives, property, and investments in the state.
L-PRES Coordinator Sanusi Abubakar explained that their visit aimed to inspect the site and commence the construction of the hospital. He outlined that the hospital, once completed, will provide services such as disease surveillance, maintaining healthy animal husbandry, disease eradication, and animal vaccination.
